Birant Akbay, Ph.D.
Birant received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Iowa. He completed an APA accredited internship at the University of Iowa’s University Counseling Services, with a clinical emphasis in sport psychology.
Birant’s clinical work is primarily guided by humanistic and existential qualities of Person-Centered Therapy (PCT), which at its core, values authentic, genuine counselor-client interaction. Throughout the therapy process, Birant works to create a nonjudgmental, collaborative, and trust-based relationship with his clients to generate a space safe enough for vulnerable self-reflection of thoughts and feelings and thus help clients foster a deepened sense of self-worth and improve quality of life. In addition to his person-centered foundation, Birant often integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based approaches, particularly in his work with student-athletes, to support clients in recognizing unhelpful thought patterns, developing effective coping strategies, and enhancing both performance and overall well-being. Guided by his commitment to the practice of cultural humility, Birant respects clients as the experts of their own lived experiences, and is committed to providing a supportive, affirming environment for clients of all identities and backgrounds.
Birant is particularly passionate about supporting clients in their progress towards therapy goals related to anxiety, depression, relationship dynamics, identity exploration, existential concerns, multicultural issues, life transitions, and sport and performance enhancement. He also has special interest in working with international students and medical professionals, leveraging his multicultural background and decade of experience as a registered nurse across various healthcare contexts.
